Staff and volunteers honor historic roots and deliver donuts to local heroes

Donut Day TSAStarted by The Salvation Army on the first Friday in June in 1938, National Donut Day was created to honor the Donut Lassies who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines of World War I. The tradition continues some 81 years later In Lee County on Friday, June 7.

“The donut continues to be a symbol of the comfort and support that The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people in need each year and more than 50,000 locally,” said Major Tim Gilliam, Area Commander of The Salvation Army of Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties. “We want to pay homage to the original Donut Lassies by sharing donuts with men and women that serve our local community every day. Including, our K-9 units.”

Pups Need Donuts Too
